From 7th to 22nd August La Notte della Taranta is coming back, it is the greatest music festival dedicated to the revival and enhancement of Salentine pizzica that this year is celebrating its twelfth edition. The festival is promoted and organized by Regione Puglia, Provincia di Lecce, Fondazione La Notte della Taranta, Unione dei Comuni della Grecìa Salentina and Istituto Diego Carpitella in cooperation with the Chamber of Commerci of Lecce and Gratta e Vinci.

Saturday 22th August, in the square of former Augustinian Monastery in Melpignano, “La Notte della Taranta” Folk Orchestra, directed for the third consecutive edition, by Mauro Pagani, will perform classic pieces of Salentine folk music among world atmosphere, jazz, Arabic influences, Italian original music and African sound. The Orchestra La Notte della Taranta, will avail itself of the collaboration Mario Arcari, music assistant of the conductor. It is made up of thirty musicians (tambourines, percussion, drums, bass, keyboard, woodwind, guitar, mandola, violin, viola, cello, small accordions and accordion) and singers. This edition too will welcome Mimmo Epifani with his mandola.

The Final Concert in Melpignano will be started by Iubal Collettivo Musicale, winner of “Note per la Notte” competition, dedicated to young groups who remake folk music and carried out in cooperation with Meeting delle Etichette Indipendenti (Free Label Meeting) that comes under La Taranta nella Rete project. Then the ancient cantor Uccio Aloisi, the great performer of pizzica and Salentine folk music will appear on the stage with Alla Bua, that comes out of the most traditional experiences of Salentine music culture. And finally Girodibanda, a Marinella Mazzotta’s and Cesare Dell'Anna’s idea, that has become a special project: a combination of the sounds of the band, folk tones, dances and Balkan-jazz “transgressions”.

Among the guests of the Final Concert are Eugenio Finardi, singer, composer, guitar and piano player whose thirty-year-long career has been ranging from rock to folk, from fado to acoustics; the African singer Angelique Kidjo, one of the most exciting performers of current music world and an original and creative celebrity. Since the beginning of her career her mission was to create a common language between different cultures; the Israeli singer-songwriter Noa and the Palestine actress/singer Mira Awad. Since 2002 they have been involved in a social and music campaign to make the public aware of the Middle East conflict. With the single “There must be another way”, that was also the title of a successful album, they represented Israel in the famous music contest Eurovision 2009 in Moscow. It is a moving paean to peace sung in 3 languages (Hebrew, Arabic and English); Simone Cristicchi and the chorus of Santa Fiora’s Miners, a project in which the Roman singer-songwriter who won the Festival of Italian Songs in 2007, presents together with a group of miners of the small village on Monte Amiata the wide and original repertoire of local traditional songs. They have been passed down just by the miners of Santa Fiora who used to sing them during feasts or parades, in pubs or in the squares of the villages; the Anglo-Saxon star Z-Star, singer, song-writer, guitar player, drummer and poet who presents an exciting performance of soul jazz world.

The novelty of this edition is the special welcome to those who will reach Melpignano by train: Pierluigi Mele, a poet and theatre director, will greet the travellers reading passages of his novel “Da Qui Tutto è Lontano” published by Lupo Editore. A joyful and young theatrical company will dance and play during the readings. Each traveller will be given pages of the book, as a moral support for the Final Concert. Then poetry sheets will be given to the audience near the Monastery of Melpignano, before the Ensemble performance.

The travelling La Notte della Taranta Festival, that comes before the Final Concert in Melpignano, will take place from 7th to 20th August 2009 (with the usual stop on the 15th August) in the squares of the Municipalities of the Grecìa Salentina (Calimera, Carpignano Salentino, Castrignano dei Greci, Corigliano d’Otranto, Cutrofiano, Martano, Martignano, Soleto, Zollino), Alessano, Galatina and Cursi.

The series of thirteen concerts starts from Corigliano d’Otranto (Friday 7th August) with the performance of Stella Grande e le Anime Bianche, Taranta Social Club e Compagnia di scherma salentina and Zimbaria. The Festival presents some of the most representative groups of Salentine pizzica (Officina Zoè, Alla Bua, Tamburellisti di Torrepaduli, Arakne Mediterranea, Uccio Aloisi Gruppu, Ghetonia, Ariacorte, Zimbaria, Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino, Menamenamò, SalentOrkestra, Antonio Castrignanò, Enza Pagliara, Anna Cinzia Villani, Claudio Miggiano, Daniele Durante) and several special projects which are the results of the collaboration among the traditional Salentine groups and musicians of other geographic and cultural origin.

Sam Karpienia, one of the most representative voices of Marseillais indipendent music, plays with Mascarimirì of Claudio Cavallo Giagnotti combining music traditions and sound innovation (Monday 10th August in Cursi). The long path of experimentation about the relationship between music of Southern Italy and Mediterranean of Bandadriatica by Claudio Prima combines with the author experience of Radicanto and the voice of Raiz to propose Sephardic chants and Mediterranean music of different African and European origin.

Ariacorte presents the Sardinian small accordion player Totore Chessa and the ancient launeddas player Luigi Lai. In the same evening Kamafei will play and sing with Alessia Tondo, Cesko and Puccia by Apres La Classe, Edoardo Zimba, Uccio Aloisi (Tuesday 18th August in Galatina). Sicilian and Salentine songs will compare on the same stage with the 28 years old Mario Incudine, who, according to the critics is able to present Sicily in a new way “a sort of story-teller and singer song-writer” together with the Salentine ethnic and music laboratory Kalascima (Monday 17th August in Carpignano Salentino). The Malicanti, a group that performs traditional repertoire of peasant world of the Salento and Gargano regions, will measure itself against A Paranza R' O Lione, a group of experimentation and revival of folk and peasant music traditions of the Centre and Southern of Italy, especially those from Campania Region, within the project Tamburi di Pietra.

In the same evening the Festival presents the concert of Daniele Durante (Thursday 13th August in Castrignano dei Greci). During the concert in Cursi (Saturday 8th August), the artists selectioned by the contest Note per la notte Rione Junno and Dj Bellezza and Transalento will play and “Taràn”, the performance by Maristella Martella, that takes inspiration from different Italian and Mediterranean dances will be presented. Worth to be seen is the concert of the Ensemble La Notte della Taranta that will perform the most significant pieces that have characterized the Festival editions from 1999 to 2008. During the concert moment of greats poetry given by Piero Milesi will alternate with moments of rhythmic explosion by Stewart Copeland and Vittorio Cosma, through folk acoustics by Ambrogio Sparagna and world arrangements by Mauro Pagani. The Festival will end in Alessano (Thursday 20th August) with the concert of Enza Pagliara, accompanied by Contadine e Trattoristi di Torchiarolo, Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino and Officina Zoè.
