The Orchestra della Notte della Taranta was founded in 2004 starting
from the Ensemble La Notte della Taranta, that in the previous
editions of the festival (since 1998) was made up of about twenty
Salentine musicians of pizzica and taranta. From the auditions
directed by Ambrogio Sparagna before and then by Mauro Pagani
in the last two years, that were organized all over Apulia, was
created the orchestra made up of about thirty musicians, who are
an extraordinary instrument of cultural promotion. New cultural
centre, the orchestra is a special place in which ancient repertoires
are remade.In the orchestra the typical instruments of our musical
tradition (small accordion, tambourine, pipes, mandolin, violin,
guitar, shawm) play a key role when they are organized in specific
sections according to their functions.
Some instruments will come into prominence such as small accordion,
because they are able to discharge melodious, harmonic and rythmic
functions at the same time.
Voices are fundamental in this system, they represent the principle
used in the culture of oral tradition, which is the constitutive
feature of Italian musical tradition, according to which the word
“rules” and music has the task to strengthen its communicative
power.

The Orchestra della Notte della Taranta in 2008 edition will be again directed by Mauro Pagani, a musician and polyinstrumentalist, who is a prominent figure in folk music and in its contamination with other music genres. He worked side by side of some great musicians engaged in this same way, first of all Fabrizio De Andrč.
