THE SALENTO AND THE GRECÌA SALENTINA
The 10th Festival of La Notte della Taranta, the most important event of Apulian summer is one of the driving ingredients in the promotion of Salentine tourist area, an attractive destination in Italy and in the world.
1. A VARIED AND ENCHANTING COASTLINE ...
... with broad beaches of fine sand, small and fascinating bays or protected crevices, sheer cliffs over the sea in a verdant setting, ecosystems included in regional parks.
2. AN ARTISTIC HERITAGE ...
... that keeps in its monumental treasures the presence of cultures that passed through the Salento which is particularly evident in the Lecce Baroque style with its different expressions.
3. CULTURAL, GASTRONOMIC AND MUSICAL TRADITIONS ...
... round off a special offer, spread among a hundred little towns, each proud of its own peculiarities, a Salento which is uncorrectly said to be minor, but nowadays is on equal footing with popular destinations such as (Lecce, Otranto, Gallipoli and Nardò).
In the heart of the east Salento region, in the area standing between Lecce and Otranto is the Grecìa Salentina, a linguistic island marked by griko, an idiom of Byzantine origin, which is still spoken by local people. This area includes eleven districts (Calimera, Carpignano Salentino, Castrignano dei Greci, Corigliano d’Otranto, Cutrofiano, Martano, Martignano, Melpignano,Soleto, Sternatia and Zollino) that founded the Unione dei Comuni della Grecìa Salentina. In this territory with an extraordinary cultural, artistic, musical and historical heritage take place the Festival of La Notte della Taranta and other outstanding events such as The Chants of Passion and the Carnival of the Grecìa Salentina.
Thanks to the efforts of politicians, intellectuals, companies, associations, enterprises and young people this territory was able to restore and keep its own historic memory, thus encouraging tourism and economy and preserving its peculiarities.
Amazing artistic remains such as dolmen, menhir, specchie (piles of stones), snow cisterns, trulli or pajari, dry stone walls, crypts covered with wall paintings, rock churches, archaelogical sites, pozzelle (wells), a landscape rich in century-old olive trees, courtyard houses, portals, mignani, castles, Baroque churches and palaces of their small towns are unique examples that complement the general offer of Salentine tourism.
Furthermore tourist accomodations, restaurants (see accomodation page), and tourist services of the grika area of the Salento provide quality and professionalism, and welcome their guests during the Festival of La Notte della Taranta.
Thanks to Salento Griko Tourist Front Office, and Info Points on the territory (see info point page) it is very easy to arrange your stay in this area and to get useful information during the Festival of La Notte della Taranta.
