Leading the charts for summer 2024, GAIA is coming to the Notte della Taranta.

The Milanese singer-songwriter, winner of Amici in 2020, will take the stage at the Melpignano Concertone on August 24, conducted by concertmaster Shablo.

GAIA won over the public with the hit Sex and Samba interpreted with Tony Effe, now double platinum FIMI and close to 60 million listens. Ready to amaze the Taranta people by interpreting the traditional folk song MenaMenaMò, the artist will dance the pizzica in paintings created by choreographer Laccio. Included by Forbes Italy magazine among the five under-30 Italians who will have the greatest impact in the future by music category, GAIA will also give the Taranta audience her famous song in Portuguese Chega, arranged by maestro Shablo mixing pizzica with pop sounds.

The most anticipated Concertone of the Italian summer, will be broadcast live on RAI 3 and RAI RADIO 2 starting at 9:20 p.m. conducted by Ema Stokholma.

Featuring the most representative artists of the current music scene, it will be held as always with free admission in the square of the former Convent of the Augustinians. The Melpignano Concertone is a cultural project of the Fondazione La Notte della Taranta supported by the Puglia Region and Pugliapromozione in collaboration with Unione dei Comuni della Grecìa salentina and Istituto Diego Carpitella.

Three hours of popular music where the rhythm of pizzica meets other musical genres from pop to urban, from electronic to trap with quotes on the piano by conductor Riccardo Zangirolami from Ennio Morricone and Astor Piazzolla. Among the first announced guests is 2024 revelation artist Angelina Mango.

The creative line of the concert will develop around the theme of the 27th edition: generation Taranta. A sequence of hypnotic pizziche contaminated by contemporary sounds, the beauty of traditional songs in Salento, Grico and Arbëreshë dialects, and the colors and sparkling atmospheres of the choreographies signed by Laccio, will make the square of 150,000 Tarantulans from all over the world dance. The imposing stage will host the narrative sets created by Galattico and Officina Chiodo Fisso based on a project by Marco Calzavara, director of photography Marco Lucarelli, direction Stefano Mignucci, live TV writers Annalisa Montaldo and Matteo Catalano.

Taranta's journey to the Concertone continues with the Itinerant Festival.

Last night in the Ugento stop to dance the pizzica of the Popular Orchestra was influencer Paola Turani. Together with her friends, tambourine in hand and dressed in white, she discovered the magical world of Salento traditions, dancing among the audience in perfect folk festival style. During the evening for her 2 million followers she reposted ig stories of her friends while dancing Teresina and Aria Caddhipulina interpreted by Salvatore Galeanda.

STELLA GRANDE

On August 11, the Itinerant Festival La Notte della Taranta lands in Sternatia, in Piazza Umberto I.

Opening the evening is Mino De Santis, class of '67, from Tuglie, a singer-songwriter who is often called the "De André of Salento" because of his vocal affinity with the great Genoese artist. However, De Santis is much closer in style and soul to Georges Brassens. His writing is free of filters and turns of phrase, able to offer a profound critique of his land, highlighting, with irony, all its contradictions and most intimate stories. Blessed with a deep voice and heavy words, loaded with life, sarcasm and bitterness, De Santis mixes irony and the grotesque in a way that invites reflection. His authentic folk songs tell of a "slow" Salento, eager to break free from the splendid imprisonment of tambourine, accordion and violin, to embrace a new language. De Santis uses a mix of dialect and Italian, creating lyrics that seem to be chewed up, rehashed and then spit out in a new form of colostrum, a nourishing and primal language. His musical stories offer a critical insight into his homeland, opening a window on a world full of contrasts and beauty, told with a directness that goes straight to the heart. In every performance, Mino De Santis manages to capture the essence of Salento, transporting the audience on a journey of emotions, reflections and bitter laughter. His music is not just a listen, but an experience that leaves a deep mark, inviting anyone to explore the depths of his land and soul. Next comes the music of Stella Grande, an outstanding artistic and musical figure who is able to masterfully combine folk tradition with current and passionate poetry. Her music is characterized by rhythmic and emotional involvement, marked theatricality and intense interpretation, which succeeds in touching the chords of the audience's soul. Stella Grande is not only an interpreter of traditional Salento music, she is also an artist who looks to the present. With a deep awareness of the importance of individual and collective memory, she knows that traditions must be preserved and remembered in the context of daily life, preventing them from becoming just a nostalgic reminder of the past. Blessed with a pliant and powerful voice, Stella Grande possesses exceptional magnetism. Since 2004, she has been the voice of the "Notte della Taranta" orchestra, under the artistic direction of Ambrogio Sparagna and Mauro Pagani. Her ability to captivate the audience is evident in each of her performances, where tradition and innovation blend harmoniously. His shows are a perfect blend of traditional Salento folk rhythms and contemporary sounds. His performances include songs with a classical flavor, but also pieces that address current issues. His latest work, entitled "Pizzica RRaggiata," is a clear testimony to this. This album represents the synthesis of her ability to innovate without losing sight of her roots, offering the audience an intense and engaging musical experience. Stella Grande continues to enchant with her art, proving that traditional music can evolve and remain relevant, reflecting the challenges and joys of the contemporary world. With each performance, she carries forward a valuable cultural legacy, making it alive and vibrant for new generations.

Each stage is a step toward the big Concertone on August 24 in Melpignano (LE), a special evening marked by the creativity of Master Concertmaster Shablo. The Notte della Taranta continues to grow, attracting thousands of spectators and celebrating the musical tradition of Salento in an increasingly innovative and engaging context distinguished by the fusion of genres and the mix of musical trends, making the event one of the most anticipated events of the Italian summer.

ANTONIO CASTRIGNANÒ & TARANTA SOUND

Next comes to the stage Antonio Castrignanò, son of the millennial tradition of taranta, is a musician and singer who stands out for his ability to reinterpret the present. With his new album "Babilonia," released by Ponderosa Music Records, Castrignanò redraws the maps of his soundscape, interweaving ancient rituals with modern experimentation. "Babilonia" represents a musical journey that goes beyond the borders of Salento, exploring different languages and cultures. Castrignanò's vision is a choral journey to discover different languages and cultures, with a desire to tell the story of oneself and learn about the history of others. The album features previously unreleased songs and original arrangements, blending melodies and rhythms with influences from other places such as Sub Saharan Africa, Turkey and India. Babylon Is Us. It starts from the south and goes back south, stage by stage, track by track, addressing universal themes such as nature, work, love, together with immense artists such as Sona Jobarteh, Enzo Avitabile, Don Rico and Badara Seck, Mercan Dede." This album, full of "Babylonian" influences, includes a variety of languages, starting with the Salento dialect, and deals with ancient but always topical themes such as the relationship between man and nature, love, work and the feminine. Antonio Castrignanò's music comes from a long personal search, which has led him to fuse the past with the present, creating a unique and contemporary sound. In "Babilonia," Castrignanò not only celebrates his roots, but also the ability of music to unite different cultures and histories. This album is an example of how tradition can evolve and adapt, keeping its essence alive and continuing to excite and engage audiences around the world.

LACCIO CHOREOGRAPHER NOTTE DELLA TARANTA

Pizzica and urban dances for the 2024 edition

Emanuele Cristofoli, aka Laccio, is the choreographer of the 27th edition of the Notte della Taranta. Among the most sought-after artistic directors of the moment, Laccio will direct the Taranta Dance Corps in the Concertone scheduled for Aug. 24 in Melpignano (LE), which will be broadcast live on RAI 3 and RAI RADIO 2.

"I am very excited to participate in the Notte della Taranta with my choreographic work. This project," says Laccio, "represents a unique opportunity for me to explore and celebrate the deep roots of our tradition, while bringing a proposal of innovation and contamination with more urban dances. My goal is to create a dialogue between the past and the present, blending traditional elements with contemporary influences to offer the audience an exciting and engaging experience."

Artistic director of XFactor, in his brilliant career, after his beginnings with Tiziano Ferro, Laccio has supervised the performances of Raffaella Carrà and Laura Pausini at Eurovision and the Sanremo Festival in 2022, his staging for Saturday Night Live on NBC of Maneskin. Official choreographer of the 66th Eurovision Song Contest, he did the dance sequences in The new Pope and Paolo Sorrentino's films Them 1 and Them 2. He worked with Morgan Freeman but also with Jung Kook of BTS in the opening ceremony of the World Cup in Qatar. On TV, he recently oversaw the staging of Michelle Impossible & Friends, Moon Shot and Da Vicino Nessuno è Normale, Alessandro Cattelan's program.

Dance rehearsals for the Concertone start today in Corigliano d'Otranto in the hall hosted by Agora Urban Laboratories in Via Mazzini. Until Aug. 22, Laccio will coordinate dancers for the formation of 12 pictures some of which will involve guest artists of the Concertone. Such is the case with Angelina Mango who will dance to the notes of a song much loved by the Taranta people.

The Taranta Corps de Ballet composed of Laura Boccadamo, Lucia Scarabino, Mihaela Coluccia, Serena Pellegrino, Cristina Frassanito, Fabrizio Nigro, Mattia Politi, Marco Martano, Stefano Campagna and Andrea Caracuta will be joined by six professional dancers: Simone Rossari and Michele Serra (assistants to the choreographer) Fabio Stroscio, Camilla Gesualdi, Federica Di Marzo, and Federica Rogoli.

Dancing pizzica has increasingly taken center stage in Melpignano since 2016, when Fondazione La Notte della Taranta decided to adopt the same formula as the music: entrusting a choreographer from a different genre with the contamination of the dance so beloved by the audience. The choreographies were curated by Fabrizio Mainini in 2016, Luciano Cannito in 2017, Massimiliano Volpini in 2018, Davide Bombana in 2019, Sharon Eyal in 2020, Thomas Signorelli in 2021, Irma Di Paola in 2022, and Francesca Romana Di Maio in 2023. Excellent training for the popular dancers that allowed them to bring to the stage a harmonious show capable of blending music, dance, photography and scenic storytelling. Unforgettable dancing performances by Nicoletta Manni étoile of Milan's Teatro alla Scala with her pizzica on pointe, "the spider" by dancer Darren Devaney, Elodie's San Vito pizzica and the overwhelming Acqua de la Funtana in the 2023 edition with Consuelo Alfieri. Real "paintings" born from the need to place alongside the voice also a frame made of choreography and sets that made the Concertone stage an installation of contemporary art and innovation.

The Concertone is a cultural project of the Fondazione Notte della Taranta supported by Regione Puglia with the participation of Unione dei Comuni della Grecìa salentina and Istituto Diego Carpitella.

NIGHT OF TARANTA LANDS IN SUSTAINABLE URBAN RENAISSANCE IN NAPLES, MILAN AND ROME WITH URBAN VISION AND PUGLIAPROMOZIONE

From today to August 24 on digital big screens the images of the Melpignano Concertone

The Notte della Taranta lands in the sustainable urban renaissance in Naples, Milan and Rome with Urban Vision and the Puglia Region Pugliapromozione Tourism Agency. A video with hypnotic images of the Melpignano Concert will be broadcast on digital big screens on the streets of the three major Italian cities promoting Apulian Popular Culture.

From today and until the long-awaited August 24 event in Melpignano, to the notes of the refrain of Ri Lo La La, sequences from the Concertone will enter the programming of Urban Vision thanks to the collaboration with Pugliapromozione. The goal: to focus on urban communication through the development of innovative shared projects, creating engaging experiences designed to bring value to entire communities and make the urban transition more vibrant and dynamic. An explicit invitation to reach out to Puglia to participate in Europe's largest collective folk music ritual.

Urban Vision is the company at the forefront of urban innovation, with the ambition to transform cities into vibrant theaters of participation and creativity, expert in cutting-edge urban entertainment content, capitalizing on the use of 2D, 3D and augmented reality (AR) technologies.

Michele Emiliano, Puglia Region President: "Pugliapromozione and Urban Vision bring the rhythm and atmosphere of Taranta to three major Italian squares. This project aims to make our popular music known beyond the borders of the region and is also our way of inviting everyone, citizens and tourists alike, to come on August 24 to Melpignano for the final Concertone. We are sure that many will be plucked by the Notte della Taranta, an authentic expression of our culture and history."

Massimo Bray, president of La Notte della Taranta Foundation: "We facilitate a dialogue between city and people by projecting beauty. Always on the move, as music does in a contamination of languages between history, tradition and innovation, to intercept a dynamic audience. A first important step toward an increasingly inclusive Taranta."

Gianluca De Marchi, CEO of Urban Vision, firmly believes in promoting sustainability and cultural value through communication. "The principles that have always characterized our relationship with the city are to create value for the community in terms of public utility, innovation, through technologically advanced solutions, totally integrated with the urban fabric."

Viviana Matrangola, Regional Councillor for Culture: "It is evocative to imagine that the sounds, colors and stories of Apulian folk dances, with their ancestral nature, can meet thousands of people thanks to digital communication, merging with the practices and lifestyles of three major urban centers. The pizzica meets the world in Naples, Rome and Milan: it is a message of promotion of our identity, but also of cultural contamination that will foster, I am sure, inspiration for new stories and cultural productions."

Gianfranco Lopane, Regional Councillor for Tourism: "We bring the magic of the Notte della Taranta to the heart of Naples, Milan and Rome. Thanks to this initiative, the hypnotic images of the Melpignano Concert will enliven the streets of major Italian cities, creating a virtual bridge between Apulian tradition and urban contexts. The use of technologies will allow us to share an engaging experience, enhancing our cultural roots and making cities real theaters of participation and tourism promotion. All, as always, to the rhythm of pizzica. In this way, we further substantiate the Puglia Region's support for one of the most important events in Puglia by inviting everyone to discover the wonders of our wonderful destination."

Luca Scandale, director Pugliapromozione: "We are proud to contribute to the knowledge of Apulian popular culture and, in particular, to the Notte della Taranta. It is a spectacular event that in recent decades has allowed Salento to be known all over the world, with tangible tourism spin-offs for Puglia."

The festival, scheduled from Aug. 3 to 22, will involve 19 towns in Salento, offering 50 events that will allow people to discover the richness and beauty of Salento's historic centers to the pressing rhythm of the pizzica. Two concerts are planned for each stage, with the participation of 34 guest bands and three special concerts by the Popular Orchestra Notte della Taranta. In addition to music, there will also be room for dance with the show "Pizzica in Scena" and nine pizzica workshops, which will actively involve the public. This 27th edition promises to be extraordinary, consolidating La Notte della Taranta as the largest traveling festival in Italy. The festival promotes popular music as an emotional experience born from the encounter between different art forms, interweaving music and dance in a path of reflection and deepening. Each stage is a step toward the big Concertone on Aug. 24 in Melpignano (LE), a special evening marked by the creativity of Maestro Concertatore Shablo.

Opening the evening at 9:15 pm is the group Jonica Popolare. The group carries on a musical project born in 2017 from the idea of Rolli Salvatore, singer and founder of the band. The initial goal of the project was to re-evaluate the ancient songs that resonated in the Salento countryside, bringing to light a valuable part of the local musical tradition. Over time, and responding to the growing demand for more "modern" folk music, Jonica Popolare evolved its style. The group began to integrate nontraditional instruments, such as sax and trumpet, while maintaining rhythms and melodies that recall the old Salento and its rich history. Today, Jonica Popolare is an established and well-known group throughout Puglia. In 2020, they produced their first record, appearing on major television shows and participating in major events such as patronal festivals and festivals throughout Italy. In 2024, the group launched their first single "MaraVita," featuring dancer Laura Boccadamo. This new song represents another step forward in their continuous musical evolution, blending tradition and modernity into a unique sound experience. Jonica Popolare continues to pursue its commitment to promote and innovate Salento folk music, bridging the past and the present and involving an increasingly large and enthusiastic audience.

This is followed by the great show by the Popular Orchestra "La Notte della Taranta" with Alessandro Chiga, Roberto Chiga, Leonardo Cordella, Mario Esposito, Peppo Grassi, Antonio Marra, Alessandro Monteduro, Sergio Pizza, Giuseppe Gallone, Attilio Turrisi, Consuelo Alfieri, Salvatore Galeanda, Ninfa Giannuzzi. Founded in 2004, the Popular Orchestra "La Notte della Taranta" was born thanks to the initiative of Ambrogio Sparagna, an eclectic cultural witness active year-round in our country and around the world. This orchestra has become a formidable instrument of cultural promotion, representing a "world in the world" through its fascinating music. Over the years, the orchestra has grown and evolved, welcoming pizzica and folk music musicians from all over Salento. Today, it is composed of artists who carry on the musical tradition of Salento, mixing it with contemporary and international influences, thus creating a unique and engaging sound. The Popular Orchestra "La Notte della Taranta" not only promotes Salento music in Italy, but also brings its vibrant energy to international stages, captivating audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Thanks to their dedication and the talent of its members, the Orchestra continues to grow and spread the magic of pizzica and Salento folk music around the world.

Theme of the 2024 edition of the Festival is Responsibility. After the passing of the great masters of folk music Luigi Chiriatti, Daniele Durante, Giovanna Marini, the Festival presents the folk revival groups that over the years have inherited the rich heritage of traditional songs and are constantly experimenting with new connections.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 8 - NARDÒ

VIA XXV LUGLIO

Pizzica workshop by the Taranta Dance Corps"
9:30 p.m.
TARANTARNEO

OFFICINA ZOÉ

On August 8, the journey of the Itinerant Festival La Notte della Taranta, stops in Nardò on Via XXV Luglio. The Festival will cross from' August 3 to 22, 19 towns in Salento with 50 appointments to discover the richness and beauty of Salento's historic centers following the overwhelming rhythm of the pizzica. A journey that includes 2 concerts per stage with 34 guest groups and 3 special concerts by the Popular Orchestra Notte della Taranta. Space also for dance with the show Pizzica in Scena and 9 pizzica workshops that will involve the public.
A 27' edition that promises to be extraordinary and confirms La Notte della Taranta as the largest Italian traveling festival that promotes popular music as a score of emotions born from the dialogue between the arts, interweaving and creating reflections and insights with dance, stage after stage toward the August 24 Concertone in Melpignano (Le), toward the long night with the creative multiverse of Maestro Concertatore Shablo for an ambitious edition that moves from genre fusion to a mix of musical trends projecting the event, with its thousands of spectators, among the most anticipated events of the Italian summer.

At 9:30 p.m. the evening starts with the music of Tarantarneo. The group's name is not a simple reference to Taranta, one of the best-known symbols of Salento folk music, but represents a musical journey that unites the province of Taranto and the Land of Arneo. This territory stretches from San Pietro in Bevagna to Torre Inserraglio, encompassing the hinterland with Veglie, Leverano, Copertino and Nardò, and then going up through Avetrana and Manduria to the Mascia canal in Lizzano. TARANTARNEO's repertoire ranges from the indiavolata of Nardò to the Taranta of Lizzano, from the pizzica of Galatone to the Taranta of San Marzano. Each performance of the group is a journey where tradition and popular music blend with the energy of the audience, creating an atmosphere where time seems to stand still in a single shared emotion. The idea to form the group was born in 2017 from the friendship of seven friends from the provinces of Lecce and Taranto, with the aim of joining forces to research, study and pass on the common traditions of their lands. This shared passion for Salento music and culture has resulted in a project that combines tradition and innovation, carrying on the musical heritage of the area. Group members: Emanuele Liquori: drum and vocals, Francesco Pastorelli: drum and vocals, Daniele Giumentaro: accordion and vocals, Giovanni Alemanno: woodwinds, Cosimo Pastore: strings and vocals, Veronica Mele: dance, Andrea De Siena: dance.

Next on stage comes the music of Officina Zoè. They are considered the great fathers of Salento music, known for their ability to turn every performance into a pure pulse-pounding experience for dance and trance. Since 1993, this enthralling band, with its unmistakable sound, has become an ambassador of pizzica around the world. The secret of Officina Zoè's success lies in their constant search for trance and cyclicity, elements intrinsic to the arcane rhythm of tambourines and minimalist music and singing. This unique combination has allowed them to create new compositions that, while telling the story of today's world, remain deeply rooted in tradition. In 2022, Officina Zoè launched the project "Officina Zoè in IPNOTICA," where percussive rhythms, trance melodies, and evocative polyphony merge with electronics, creating a ritual that echoes as much the ancient mists of time as the electronic tribality of contemporary sound. During their career, Officina Zoè has recorded ten albums, including "Terra," "Sangue Vivo," "Miracle," "Crita," "Live in Japan," "Cursed Trouble," "Taranta Nera," "Mama Sirena," "Live in India," and "Incontri Live." Massimo Panarese, a Salento musician, founded the "Tamburellisti di Otranto" in 2009 to protect and pass on Salento's musical traditions to future generations. This initiative involved forty children who are passionate about music and talented in playing the tambourine, creating a mix of pure energy that links back to the region's cultural roots. The group, which was formed by the "Music...ando" Artistic-Cultural Association, has grown rapidly from a small nucleus of 13 young tambourine players to now have 55 members. The "Tamburellisti di Otranto" have become a unique phenomenon in the national music scene, attracting attention and admiration for their authenticity and engaging rhythms. Their shows are a tribute to the land of Salento, including folk songs and cultural tributes, such as thesong dedicated to Don Tonino Bello. Their mastery of the stage is amazing, combining energy, passion and talent under Panarese's careful guidance. The result is a picture of young musicians who, through music, express their sociality and give sincere emotions to the audience.

Consuelo Alfieri: "Siroco"

Next comes to the stage the music of Consuelo Alfieri and band with the musical project "Siroco" stands out for its ability to celebrate the rich tradition of Salento folk music, mixing ancient melodies and engaging rhythms with contemporary sounds. The name "Siroco," inspired by the warm desert wind blowing in the Mediterranean, perfectly reflects the essence of this group: a deep connection with the musical roots of Salento and a projection into new sonic frontiers. Each performance of "Siroco" is an exciting journey through the culture and traditions of Salento, guided by the infectious energy of the artists who make up the group. The audience is invited to live a unique musical experience, where past and present come together in a harmonious embrace of sounds and emotions. The goal of "Siroco" is to preserve and spread Salento folk music both nationally and internationally. With their passion, dedication and artistry, the artists of "Siroco" bring the magic and authenticity of Salento's musical traditions to a growing audience, conveying a message of unity and connection through music. The band is made up of talented musicians Consuelo Alfieri (accordion and vocals), Giuseppe Astore (violin and vocals), Sergio Pizza (frame drums), Giacomo Contaldo (guitar), and Carlo Massarelli (woodwinds), Gianmarco Alfieri (accordion and violin), and Serena Pellegrino (dance). On August 6, the journey of the Itinerant Festival La Notte della Taranta, makes a stop in Cursi Piazza Pio XII. Each stage features two concerts, with the participation of 34 guest bands, as well as three special performances by the Popular Orchestra Notte della Taranta. There will be no shortage of space for dance with the show "Pizzica in Scena" and nine pizzica workshops, which will actively involve the public, allowing them to experience the energy of the Taranta firsthand. By promoting Salento folk music, the festival creates an exciting dialogue between the arts, weaving music and dance into a path of reflection and discovery. Each stage brings us closer and closer to the grand final Concertone, scheduled for August 24 in Melpignano (LE), a special evening directed by Maestro Concertatore Shablo. The Notte della Taranta is not only a celebration of traditional music, but also a stage for sonic innovations, confirming itself as a festival that knows how to renew itself and captivate the audience with its vibrant energy and its ability to unite past and present in a single, extraordinary musical experience.

Opening the evening at 9:15 p.m., the show "A Mimmo," conceived and written by Pino Ingrosso in musical collaboration with guitarist Salvatore Casaluce, pays tribute to the great Domenico Modugno on the 30th anniversary of his death. Pino Ingrosso, a Salento artist known to the general public for his 20-year collaboration with Oscar winner Nicola Piovani, created this show to celebrate the legendary Apulian singer-songwriter. "To Mimmo" sees Pino Ingrosso, (vocals and guitar), Salvatore Casaluce (guitars) and Daniela Guercia (reciting voice and percussion) retracing Modugno's greatest hits, presenting them to the audience with authenticity and simplicity, without frills or special effects. The performance is enriched with anecdotes, stories and trivia about the famous artist's long career. The performance creates a deep connection between Ingrosso and Modugno, linked not only by their common Salento origin, but also by Ingrosso's extraordinary vocal and interpretative talents, who emerges as the natural witness of the great "Mimmo Modugno."

The show promises to be an exciting journey through Modugno's music and life, offering the audience a unique opportunity to relive the most significant moments of the singer-songwriter's career through the heartfelt and genuine interpretations of Pino Ingrosso and the talent of his collaborators.
Next comes the music of Li Strittuli. The Salento folk music troupe, was born in 1996, emerging during a period of great rediscovery of Salento's musical tradition. The members of the group, linked by years of shared musical studies, embarked on a journey of not only instrumental but also cultural exploration, in search of almost forgotten sounds. Using typical instruments such as the violin, accordion, guitar and Salento frame drum, they brought authentic folk music back to life. After a few years of activity, the group decided to focus their research on traditional songs from the Brindisi area, with particular attention to their hometown of San Pancrazio Salentino. This research brought the members of "Li Strittuli" into contact with local elders, who shared with them a valuable musical repertoire that had been shelved for years. From this collaboration emerged some of the most beautiful songs, which today enrich the group's lineup.

The main goal of "Li Strittuli" is to offer a journey into Salento folk music, through genres such as pizzica pizzica, pizzica tarantata, love stornelli and songs of work and protest. The group has participated in numerous popular music festivals and made several television appearances. Prominent among their awards is winning the memorial dedicated to Luigi Stifani, a famous violinist of the tarantate. In addition, they collaborated with Andrea Sacco, renowned Gargano cantor, and were guests at London's Business Design Centre on the occasion of "Sicily Fest." At a time when musical fashions change rapidly, "Li Strittuli" remain faithful to the Salento tradition, offering a repertoire devoid of modern contamination. Their commitment is clear: to preserve and enhance the authentic beauty of Salento folk music, convinced that it needs no transformation to be appreciated.

The theme of the 2024 edition of the Festival is Responsibility. After the passing of the great masters of popular music Luigi Chiriatti, Daniele Durante, and Giovanna Marini, the Festival presents the folk revival groups that over the years have inherited the rich heritage of traditional songs and are constantly experimenting with new connections.

SCAZZACATARANTE in VAMPA

Third stop of the Itinerant Festival La Notte della Taranta on August 5 in Sogliano Cavour, in Piazza Falcone e Borsellino with Makarìa and Scazzacatarante.

At 9:15 p.m., opening the evening in Sogliano will be Makarìa with Viaggio nella Tradizione. The group was founded in May 2022, with the intention of promoting traditional music from Salento. The lineup consists of Claudio Vincenti, who plays the frame drum and sings; Giulio Colazzo, who plays the accordion and sings; Alex Santoro, also on frame drum; and Andrea Foggetti, who plays guitar and mandola. Their concert will offer a musical journey through the most popular songs of the Salento tradition, starting from the sounds of the lower Salento to those of the upper Salento. This will be enriched by dance performances by Erika Giordano and Mina Vita, who will accompany the audience on this cultural and musical journey.

Next, the group The Scazzacatarante musical group will perform on stage. Born in 1998 in Galatina, when a group of friends, united by a passion for pizzica pizzica, decided to carry on the Salento folk tradition. With a pinch of innovation, a strong charisma and a team spirit, they perform in the most important squares of Salento and beyond, trying to make the pressing rhythm of the pizzica-taranta known in Italy and around the world.Victor Hugo said that "the heart lives as long as it has something to love, just as fire lives as long as it has something to burn." But how long can a fire burn? That of Scazzacatarante has been burning for a good 25 years, melting and animating this well-known Salento pizzica group and pouring its warmth and energy into the audience, and there could not have been a more apt title for the band's new song, released last April: "VAMPA." It is the song of a burning and living feeling. It expresses the love of a man for a woman, but it is also a metaphor for the passion that holds the group firmly together. On the rhythms of traditional pizzica, with an orchestral inspiration thanks to the presence of winds and strings in the recording, Scazzacatarante give voice to that torment of love that does not find the courage to manifest itself and lingers on the doorstep of the beloved. "De nanti casa tua iu passu e spassu, mo cu te visciu pe nu paru d'ore": this is precisely the sweet restlessness of those who love and are silent, the cross and delight of every unexpressed love. Anyone who has felt at least once that flame in his or her chest cannot help but recognize himself or herself in the feeling that travels through the verses of "Vampa," cannot help but see himself or herself in those sighs, in the warmth of those tears of love, in the hope of one day seeing the deep ardor of a soul that does not give itself peace corresponded. Group members:Tony Taranta (Drum and Voice); Davide Donno (Drums and Voice), Luca Congedo (Drums), Matteo Gaballo (Violin), Lorenzo Codazzo (Bass), Pantaleo De Pascalis (Accordion), Roberto Margari (Clarinet and Sax), Giorgio Giaracuni (Trumpet).

From August 3 to 22, the festival will travel through 19 towns in Salento, offering 50 appointments to discover the richness and beauty of Salento's historic centers, following the overwhelming rhythm of the pizzica. The journey will feature two concerts at each stop, with the participation of 34 guest groups and three special concerts by the Popular Orchestra Notte della Taranta. In addition to music, there will be room for dance with the show "Pizzica in Scena" and nine pizzica workshops involving the public.
